BLAŽ

The main project of yesterday evening in the Tora bonsai school was Blaž's juniper. Let's look at the story: In February 2011 I was invited to Blaž's for visit and work on juniper. I was pleased to respond to the invitation, and then first met the tree. We spent quite some time to analyze and determine the future of the tree.

Osredni projekt tokratnega večera v šoli Tora je bil Blažev kitajski brin. Poglejmo zgodbo: Februarja 2011 me je Blaž povabil na druženje in delo na brinu pri njem doma. Kar nekaj časa sva porabila za analizo in določanje prihodnosti.

Juniper, February 2011

For more serious work we ran out of time and then I saw the tree last time for quite some time.

After first intervention

After two and a half years Blaž brought the tre in  to the studio. Meanwhile it was re-potted into an upright position, Blaž worked on dead wood and prepared the crown for styling. During this time juniper replaced stress needles with normal ones, green mass is in very good condition.

Juniper, November 2013, as arrived to the studio

Despite the well prepared tree work, however, lasted three days, Blaž wired all the branches and then we started to style the tree. During wiring Blaž decided to shorten the first left branch of the tree and put the dynamic movement to the right. My favorite solution was the opposite - cut right one and balancing the tree with a branch on the left - but the owner of the tree is Blaž and in Tora bonsai school the owner of the tree always has the last word ;-)

This is the result after the first styling. There is still to much branches in the crown, but Blaž will work on the definition of the crown first. And because this species is growing very fast, he will have a lot of work! In the next stage even more work on the root system must be done and re-potting in a better pot which that tree certainly deserve .

Development February 2011 - November 2013

Tomaž also finished the first phase on his beech. He wred all branches ( also the ones which will be cut later, for training :-) ), and then styled it. Because it is a species that is very sensitive to pruning and is slow in developing, cutting was done with care. Trunk and primary branches were given a form that was planned, everything else gets a turn in the following stages. A tree has a beautiful future !

MARIBOR

Yesterday we were in Maribor starting a new season of school; Simon, the organizer of the workshop, Dušan, Davorin and this time also Natasha, who has joined the Maribor group, have been working on new and old projects. Projects which step by step progress towards the ultimate goal are the sense of the school. Through various stages of development of the same tree students can learn the most.

Dušan wired his small Larix

Simon worked on his sumo Carpinus which is developing nicely

Of course, there are more projects, but about them I'll write next time ...
Tomaž is a new member of the Central Group, for his first project he chose an elegant beech from stock in my garden. Line and tappering of the trunk promise much, of the two options (cascade and literati) that the tree offered and has been presented to him on sketches, Tomaž chose the literati style. The objective is to bring the tree in exhibition form in three to five years. On Fagus things go slowly ...

To be continued ...

MAKLEN

Miha, Aleš and Roland attended the last night's session in Tora bonsai school. Let me introduce the Miha's project first, which is developing nicely. It is a complex species for bonsai - field maple (Acer campestre) - its hardness does not forgive mistakes at wiring ... The tree is still young in its development, but is already showing its potential. At first styling a year and half ago my friend Hans Van Meer was helping, so it is quite right that Miha used the famous Van Meer's technique  last night ;-).

Last night, Miha worked on improving the structure of the crown. Long branches without narrowing were replaced by the shorter side's ones and a tree immediately acquired on quality. True structure of branches with a natural narrowing can be obtained only by careful and precise trimming. Pay attention to the difference in the first branch of the left - there is the most visible improvement in the structure.

After, notice how the structure of the crown has improved

Development: March 2012 - November 2013

Roland started a new project - he made the first intervention on the old Prunus mahaleb. After analyzing and planning of the future he started to work ...

DELAMO

Bonsai life going on despite the turmoil. Work in the studio runs without interruption ... Sometimes with small, sometimes with greater audience, but always intensely and with one goal: to make progress!

Bonsajsko življenje kljub pretresom teče s polno paro naprej. Delo v ateljeju poteka brez prekinitev ... Včasih z manjšo, včasih z večjo udeležbo, vedno pa intenzivno in  z enim samim ciljem: napredovati!

At the weekend I prepared the composition with literati pine for club's workshop, which was organized in Miren by Bojan and his gang. The atmosphere was great, the attendance was surprisingly high!

ERD

This time I was headed to the land of the rising sun. Deliberately written in lowercase, because the road unfortunately did not lead me to Japan :-) Early morning on the way to the east, towards Hungary, was really magical, and predicted that the weekend in Erd will be nice!

The team of Marczika Bonsai Studio (Andras Marczika, Sandor Papp, Balint Tirpák) organized 2nd bonsai and suiseki exhibition in the City Gallery in Erd, in the suburbs of Budapest. They bet on quality and not on quantity, exhibition environment in the gallery was tastefully prepared, the organization at a high level. All exhibited trees have been  properly presented - with tables and accompanying plants.

Ekipa Marczika Bonsai studia (Andras Marczika, Sandor Papp, Balint Tirpak) je v Mestni galeriji v Erdu, v predmestju Budimpešte, organizirala 2. razstavo bonsajev in suisekijev.

Under intimately lit arcades of renovated gallery a nice surprise was waiting: it was an exhibition with the dominance of deciduous trees! Most were already without leaves, so they show their skeletons, their structures and thus their mistakes. However, some trees were excellent! Linden tree on the left shelf in the picture below, from Bolglarka Eppich and Sandor Papp, was later declared to be the best deciduous tree. Unfortunately I do not have a suitable photo of the tree ... I'm sure we'll be able to see it on Sandor's blog!

Sandor Papp prepared a number of trees for exhibition, as is appropriate for the host, one of the best was certainly a classic Korean hornbeam in the Isabelia pot. Very good work!

Zelo dobro delo!

Another tree from the Sandor's hands: Japanese maple. Still somewhat young in its development, but the tree with great potential!

Še eno drevo izpod rok Sandorja: japonski javor. Še nekoliko mlado v svojem razvoju ampak drevo z velikim potencialom!

Even my colleague Nik Rozman exhibited a Korean hornbeam, any defect around the tree's nebari is offset by the extremely good ramification. Nik also used a bronze bird on dry branch in his composition - excellent composition, superb production! Taking care of the details always impress me.

Skrb za detalje me vedno navduši.

Speaking of detail - there is no bonsaism without details. There was also an excellent stand for shohin of Zoltan Siranyij.

I was also impressed by Chinese quince of Andras and Eva Koos. A fine example of the neagari style, crown is crying for some wire and a few extra years of maturing, but the potential is great.

Navdušila me je tudi kitajska kutina Andrasa in Eve Koos. Lep primerek sloga neagari, krošnja sicer kliče po žici in nekaj dodatnih letih zorenja, toda potencial je velik.

Even demonstrations weren't missing, a demonstrators were Sandor Papp, who admitted that both organization and demonstration were a little to much to deal with ;-), and the young Czech talent Jan Culek, who performed last year in Ljubljana EBA convention at NTC.

Tilia was therefore declared to be the most beautiful deciduous tree in the exhibition, Old lady, my Prunus mahaleb got the best tree award. The tree has a long history and it is important in my personal development as well as in the development of the Slovenian bonsai. And not only that. According to words of Jan Culek, exactly that Prunus two years ago at an exhibition in Poland impressed him also, and it was a motivation that he devoted his life to bonsai art. I'll save full story of the tree for another time, this time I exhibited it first time with no leaves and presented it to the general public its structure.

Yew of Andras and Eva Koos was declared the best conifer, this is a new tree in their collection.

Award in shohin category was won by juniper of Nik Rozman. Congratulations, Nik!

It was a nice weekend, hanging out with friends, and trees, and even Budapest rewarded us with beautiful views. See you next year!
